Last Kurdish Forces Withdraw from Aleppo After Ceasefire with Syrian Government Following Deadly Clashes and Civilian Displacement

The Kurdish forces have pulled out of Aleppo. This happened after they made a peace deal with the government. There were a lot of fights before this. Many people had to leave their homes. The Kurdish forces and the Syrian government finally stopped fighting. Many people were. Had to move away, from Aleppo. The Kurdish forces are now gone from the city.

Aleppo, Syria – January 11 2026. The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces fighters have left Aleppo. This means they are no longer in the citys neighborhoods where most people’re Kurdish. They made a deal to stop fighting with the government. Before they left there was a lot of fighting, in Aleppo. Many people. Got hurt. Than 140,000 people had to leave their homes. The Syrian Democratic Forces are gone from Aleppo now.

The commander of the SDF Mazloum Abdi said that they have an agreement on Sunday. This agreement is to stop attacks on residents. They made this agreement because of help from countries. Mazloum Abdi said “we have an agreement that means we will stop fighting and we will get the people who were hurt the people who are stuck and the fighters, out of the Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud neighbourhoods and take them to eastern Syria”. He put this on X. He wants the people who helped make this agreement to make sure everyone follows the rules and lets the people who had to leave their homes come back safely. The SDF and Mazloum Abdi really want this to work so the Kurdish residents are safe.

The news from Syria is that buses took the group of SDF fighters away from the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood. They left during the night. Went to areas in northeastern Syria that the SDF controls. The Governor of Aleppo Azzam al-Gharib told Al Jazeera that there are no SDF fighters, in the city. This happened after the government got control of Sheikh Maqsoud, which was the last area that people were fighting over. The government had already taken control of Ashrafieh and Bani Zaid before this. Now the SDF fighters are gone from Sheikh Maqsoud too.

The fighting started this week. It began when talks about making the SDF a part of Syrias army did not work out. This led to a lot of violence, in areas where many Kurdish people live. The Syrian government said they had to do this to make the area safe again.. The Kurdish people said the government was being aggressive and hurting civilians in those areas. The SDF is still a part of this situation. The number of people who got hurt or died is not certain. It is very high:

The Syrian government said that a lot of people died, at 22 to 24 people and many more got hurt, around 130 people. These people included civilians. Some people think that the Syrian Democratic Forces, the SDF were responsible, for the deaths and injuries because they were shooting at areas where people live. The Syrian Democratic Forces, the SDF were shelling zones.

People who watch for rights problems and people who live there said that many people were killed during the five days of fighting. There was a lot of damage, to the neighborhoods too. The rights monitors and local people said that dozens of people were killed overall.

An official from the interior ministry said that they moved over 400 fighters to a different place. This included, about 360 people who were actually fighting and 59 people who were hurt. At the time they took about 300 Kurds into custody and some of these people were security personnel. The interior ministry official told this to AFP. The Kurdish fighters were the ones who were evacuated.

The ceasefire started after announcements and stops in fighting and it made it safe for people who were leaving, including those who were hurt and regular people to get out. The Syrian military said that their work, in Sheikh Maqsoud was done by Saturday afternoon and now they are giving the buildings and other things to the people in charge of the country.

The Kurdish forces are leaving Aleppo. This is a big change. They had been in Aleppo since the war in Syria started. The Kurdish forces also controlled an area in the northeast of Syria where they made their own decisions. What is happening now shows that it is hard to bring all the groups together under a new government after Assad especially with all the tension in the region. The Kurdish forces had been in Aleppo, for a time and now they are going.

The United States and European Union have called for renewed dialogue between the parties to prevent further escalation. Residents have begun returning to the affected neighborhoods under government supervision, with humanitarian assessments underway.
